[Review] My Princess Korean Drama
'My Princess' is a Korean drama that aired during 2011. it consists of sixteen episodes, much like your typical run of the mill Korean drama. In fact, this series is very stereotypical and shares common straits with many other Korean dramas, though that doesn't necessarily mean that it is not a delightful and fun show.

The series revolves around our female protagonist, named Lee Sul. Kim Taehee plays the role of Lee Sul. At the start of the show, our female lead is much like every other girl; she attends college and longs to live a luxurious life. Optimistic and somewhat happy go lucky, Lee Sul is the standard Korean female lead. She displays her crush towarrds Nam Jungwoo, her history professor openly and is oft found to be sighing and pondering over him during lectures. However, one day Lee Sul is suddenly told that she is actually a descendant of the last emperor of Korea, which means that she is a princess. Soon afterwards, the monarchy is reinstated, and Lee Sul is officially acknowledged as a princess. Thus begins the story and journey of a girl who lived modestly for most of her life, yet catapulted into the media's ruthless attention and forced to adopt a new persona in order to become the representative of South Korea.
Lee Sul is determined and girly. She spends most of her time wistfully gaxing at her professor, but she later develops into a more independant and selfless person. Park Haeyoung is the male lead of the show. He is a chaebol and diplomat, or in other words, the heir to the Daehan Group. Brusque and slightly arrogant, Park Haeyound also embodies the streotypical male lead for a Korean drama. He helps Lee Sul to become a more ladylike and refined princess.

Of course there are also other characters, with the most noticeable being Oh Yoonjoo, the curator of Haeyoung museum. She is Lee Sul's greatest rival and often schemes and attempts to get into sabotage Lee Sul's life after she enters the palace. Although she intends to marry Park Haeyoung in order for fame and wealth, she is secretly still in love with Nam Jungwoo, Lee Sul's crush, who was her lover back in her college days. Nam Jungwoo bears resentment yet also affection towards Oh Yoonjoo due to her betrayal several years ago which catalysed her entrance into the world of finance.
For the most part, the story is about Lee Sul trying to adapt to life in the palace, and thus the storyline of 'My Princess' is somewhat reminiscent of Goong, a Korean drama which also places emphasis on the female protagonist's struggle to adapt to palace life and to also win the hearts of her people. It's nice to be able to watch a drama with an angle that isn't overdone and attempts to follow a plot.

Throughout the story there are some heartwarming and cute moments sprinkled in here and there, but there is also quite a bit of drama and angst. Misconceptions and confusion also crops up a lot. Whilst this is not particularly evident in the first half of the show, it later on becomes rather tedious and repetitive.
The story's resolution is also very open and I wish it was more conclusive, but in general, the pacing and events of the story are easy to understand.

By no means is 'My Princess' a remarkable drama. It is full of clichés and offers nothing new to the table. Actually, at times, it can be melodramatic and dull too. But there are also humerous moments and it's rather cute and amusing at times. So whilst this drama is not particularly special nor outstanding, it's a series that fans of Korean dramas will most likely enjoy, even if does not become a firm favourite.

It's finally a new year, 2015. So Happy New Year and may all your aspirations and ambitions be accomplished.
